"Comfortable Communism": the representation of Living Spaces in Riga in Soviet-Era Art Films

Abstract
The aim of this article is to interpret the discourse of residential spaces of Riga through the films of the Soviet period and to examine essential changes in residential structure. Specific image of cinematic formal techniques is used in relation to the urban and residential structures. The results of movie review are compared with changes in the residential development between 1945–1990. 82 movies display that residential spaces are frequently portrayed in the Soviet cinema and they forma an integral part of the Soviet urban perception.
